Social Emotional Learning
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children, youth, and adults acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to recognize and manage their emotions, demonstrate caring concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenging situations constructively (Elias et al., 1997, and CAEL, Safe and Sound, 2005).
SEL takes place within the context of safe, participatory school, family, and community environments that support children’s development and provides opportunities and recognition for successfully applying these competencies.

Jeffco has adopted the 5 core components of social and emotional learning outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self- Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision Making
This approach promotes intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence.
